Machine Quilting Friend and Coach

Quilting Enthusiasts

Quilters gather. That is what we do. We get together to sew, to share, to learn and to encourage one another. We are a learning social group. It is a good and exciting day when we share a new tool, product, fabric line or quilt pattern. We use all kinds of methods to expand our quilting knowledge. We invite topical speakers, have round-robin tool or technique meetings and quilt challenges.

The round-robins are a good example of how community sharing and friendships start. A 2-hour gathering is dedicated to 6 to 10 members sharing a technique or tool. At their round-robin station, they have 15 minutes to share their quilting tip or tool. The sounds of laughter and excitement fill the air as members move from station to station. I had the pleasure of sharing at a round-robin. It's wonderful to see wide-eyed quilters surround your table eager to learn something new to enhance their quilt making.

When we gather with like-minded enthusiasts it's a great place to find mutual encouragement to start a journey down a new path. Learning in a community is sometimes all we need to get started. With community comes support and accountability.

This is another reason why and How I Began Teaching Machine Quilting. Through it, I learned why quilters were hesitant to learn machine quilting. Many fell prey to 3 Mistakes Quilters Make When Starting Machine Quilting. And I wanted to help.

This awareness led to my machine quilting lecture, “From Frustration to Fabulous”, the most requested lecture from quilting organizations. In this lecture, I talk about 5 Beginner Steps to Master Machine Quilting.

Making A Connection

It is at these community gatherings I meet aspiring quilters who want to learn or improve machine quilting.

Sometimes it is a guild meeting, quilt show or a quilt shop. Other times we find each other through various online and print publications and social media outlets. Quilters who want to learn or improve machine quilting see my work and want to learn more. They want to take a class or attend one of my lectures. Or they are a subscriber to the Living Water Quilter, YouTube channel.

Working Together

Once we find each other, I share tips and techniques in various ways to meet needs and learning preferences. Some like videos, others like tutorials, some prefer to attend a day class, while others may favor a multi-day retreat. It’s fabulous when there is a match! Me—with a passion to help quilters learn, improve in machine quilting and grow in confidence—and quilters ready and eager to learn.

Watching a quilter invest in themselves through taking workshops, attend a trunk show for inspiration and/or join me for a retreat is exciting. It’s exciting to watch them absorb and apply the information and techniques. Most of all, it's thrilling to see the fruit of their efforts displayed with glowing confidence. I love it when they share a completed project from a workshop. Or when one of my techniques is a paradigm shift. These are permanent, lasting changes, a stepping stone in mastering machine quilting.

With time, practice, coaching and the SLS community, you may achieve similar results.
